The Benefits of Colocation

March 07, 2013

In the technology industry today, many companies are opting for the same features of a large IT department, but with the price of a small business. Services such as colocation make this possible.

Colocation is a type of Web hosting that stores someone’s Web server and provides fast Internet connections. Users place their server in someone else’s rack and data centers provide IP, bandwidth and power to the server.

One of the biggest benefits of colocation is that users own their own Web server, giving them complete control and no limitations on customizations such as the software they can install or the plugins or extensions they use. This control also enables users to monitor bandwidth costs and pay only for what is used, rather than opting for packages that come with other types of hosting.

A low-cost limited bandwidth business grade DSL line can cost around $150 to $200, but for the same price or less, a single server can be placed in a colocation facility that provides higher bandwidth speeds and better redundancy for the network connections.

However, if users don’t want the responsibility of managing the server, managed services are available with colocation depending on the data center and its agreement.

Having the server hosted in a data center is beneficial for a relocating business or one without a physical office, as well as for a variety of security reasons. Data centers can offer the same security measures as large enterprises, including security patches, surge protection and firewalls and hacker protection.

Giglinx is a provider of IP transit and colocation services, working with partners such as Level 3, AT&T (News - Alert), Comcast, Telx and others to provide high levels of reliability and service in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
